Sherri has been making these really awesome bracelets made from the bindings of old books that she gets from thrift stores. I was looking through some of these books trying to find illustrations to use for artwork for the new Defiance, Ohio record when I found these gems of fucked-up thinking. The first two images are from a book titled "Biology In Daily Life" by Francis D. Curtis and John Urban, copyright 1949. The last two pages are from a book titled "America's Building: The Makers of Our Flag" by George Earl Freeland and Edward Everett Walker, copyright 1944.

Last night was the first meeting of the silicon user's group. The event text that I included on the letsgo!! events/calendar blog was:
The Silicon Users Group is a new thing that Fluffy and I conceived as a chance for Bloomington-based hackers, makers, technologists, etc. to get together, share skills, and discuss projects and ideas. Technology can be a pretty isolating thing, but also an exciting and interesting one, so we wanted to organize an active, excited community around technology. If you use technology for art or activism, or are interested in the efforts of others to do so, please meet us at the Encore Cafe between 6-8 on Thursday, January 19 2006. Bring your notebook computer if you want as some of us will surely be working on projects during this time. The idea is similar to dorkbot, I guess but with a more universal, bloomingtonian (technology = bike trailers = cardboard mulching = podcasting) bent.
The meeting was just Fluffy, Brian Chase, and I but we talked about some interesting ideas. I made this memory map of some of the ideas that we discussed:
I created a mailing list that you can subscribe to if you're interested. Just send an e-mail to siliconusers-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.
I was working on Pages stuff until 2a last night. Mainly filling orders for online book sales which has proven to be an interesting but potentially time consuming revenue source. It was funny though, going through donations and figuring out which books to sell and at what price while in the midst of reading The Open Veins of Latin America which discusses how, throughout history, most latin American countries were stripped of their resources to be sent to imperial powers in Europe or the US.

I heard the below story when listening to NPR on the drive to Cbus this weekend. Its pretty sad, I think, that the only interest the US has in other languages/cultures is when its perceived as profitable.
The ABCs of Staying Competitive: "What does it take to compete against one of the fastest growing economies in the world? A group of students in a Chicago classroom know the answer to that question. And they'll tell you in Mandarin. Diantha Parker reports."
