katrina article

My friend Jenny forwarded this article to me, written by Josh Breitbart, about the response to Hurricane Katrina. Its a good overview of a lot of different news sources, and worth reading. Breitbart states something that I've been thinking about a lot:

Time and again in Katrina's wake, we saw people in positions of official authority thwart the initiatives of everyday people that would have saved lives and alleviated suffering.
My friend Greg asked me in an e-mail, "How would an anarchist society deal with such a
calamity?" and I guess, looking at things now, I would say that it would deal with the calamity in the same way that people, abandoned and left to their own devices, did in our society - with a surprising amount of compassion, ingenuity, and community.
