To whom this may concern,
I am a resident of Bloomington and play music with other Bloomington residents. Increasingly, practicing in band members' homes in residential areas is coming in conflict with some neighbors and the enforcement of the city's "Quiet Nights" initiative. Certainly, I and other musicians respect the desires of others to have quiet neighborhoods, and many of us also enjoy the quiet atmosphere in these neighborhoods. However, it is difficult to reconcile our desire to practice the (sometimes loud) music that we take very seriously with our respect for all the noise preferences of our neighbors. Because of this, we are trying to seek out alternate spaces to practice music that would pose less of a risk of adding noise pollution to residential neighborhoods. I am writing to inquire about the possibility of allowing local bands to schedule time to practice at Rhino's when there are not ongoing youth programs or shows. If this is not feasible, perhaps there are other city-maintained spaces which might be able to accommodate such activity. From locals who have become well known international performers, to the yearly Lotus Festival, to the thriving independent music scene, to the numerous clubs and venues in Bloomington, to Rhino's itself, Bloomington has a strong music culture that I think contributes greatly to the quality of life in town. It would be a great thing for the city to support the efforts of local musicians while helping to alleviate some of the noise issues in residential neighborhoods. If there is someone who might be a better contact for this question, I would appreciate it if you could provide me with their contact information. Thanks for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Geoffrey Hing

a bit of a cheesy term, perhaps, but walking through dimly lit, potentially perilous structures is real fun. especially places that seem hastily abandoned and are awash with clues as to those who inhabited the structure. ginger told me how she obsessed for a long time over the personal belongings and documents of the tragic family that had lived in their house in cleveland, miss. before them. the attic in goldsboro, the tb ward in kzoo, the factory in columbus. i really like these places i've visited in the last couple of months. somewhere i found a reference to a website that offered info on abandoned structures in ohio. the site is http://www.ohiotrespassers.com/.

so i had this old vistalite vl-300 that has held up pretty well. somewhere along the way, i lost the plastic lens that covers the batteries, pcb, and leds. a little googling for vistalite found that they're now owned by bell sports and a quick call put me in contact with their vistalite division at
800-969-4476
they actually still had replacement parts and they're sending me some!!!

happy campers - this film, written and directed by the writer of the classic (in my book at least) 'heathers' combines some of the intelligence, wit, and realistic cultural commentary of heathers with the hijinx and sexuality of 'wet hot american summer'. despite it's departure from being a total farse and it's attempts at philosophizing, it turns out to still be much funnier than 'wet hot american summer' and the not so much serious as real undertones are appreciated. this one must have gone straight to video but it's real good.
the thermals - the pop hooks and garagey influences invoke the better aspects of the strokes but this is more rocking and less cheesy. for some reason, the vocals and lyrical phrasing reminds me a little of the more up-temp neutral milk hotel songs. it's going to be my hot summer jam.
quicksilver - book one of neal stephenson's 'the baroque cycle' it puts the reader in a seemingly well-researched world that sits between that created in stephenson's earlier work 'cryptonomicon' and colonial america. i don't usually enjoy period pieces but this novel seems to rely less on the novelty of the past as the opportunity it offers to contemplate the novelty of the present and it's science that we take for granted. all this scientific and mathematical history coupled with some social commentary or philosophizing and enough adventure to appeal to a lot of my literary desires. it's thick but i'm sure i'll get through it quick.
