best show ever

i always get stressed when given responsibility for an event or a situation that is already kind of messed up. this sucks and sometimes my stress can be counter-productive. this was the case on wednesday when i got a call from eric asking me to do the carrie nations/k10 show. i didn't have a problem doing it, but it's difficult because eric and my band members don't get along so well which puts me in an akward place.

we moved the show to the hag collective which made things a bit more simple. when i called about that to make sure it was ok, i found that my earlier call to ask whether we could cook for the bands there was already being taken care of by the hags and the hags' men's auxilary (jonnie + brian).

the bands showed up and it was awesome to see so many people that i really like and to meet new awesome people. there were the carrie nations, the k10 prospect, some kids who had come up with the k10 prospect who i had met at the weakerthans show in cincinatti and some kids from asheville in a metal twinged hardcore band called resurrectum who hopped on the show, it was good times.

good times

this is an old experience recalled. well the distant past at least. from last friday, but it was nice and i feel that sometimes the nice things don't get recorded here and only the dramatic.

it had been an event that had generated subtle excitement all throughout the preceding weeks but it was also the kind of event that could be forgotten amongst logistical complications or the general muddle that all our lives had become to some degree. but i guess the fact that the weakerthans were ryan's favorite band was enough to mean that on that friday afternoon brian, becca, ryan, david, and i were all loaded into the jeep and rolling down i-71 south to cincinatti. i don't remember the conversation down. it wasn't a geoff and ryan 2 hour argument session but it was good. relaxed and pleasant. it fealt good to get out of town.

before we went to the show we dropped brian off at his family's house in finneytown. the drive from the highway to his house was discursive and filled with ryan reminiscing about cincinatti. when we eventually got to brian's house, we got to meet his mom and peruse the house for embarrasing childhood photos. this was sweet until we realized that we were late for the show.

we drove across the ohio into kentucky and got to the show space which was totally ridiculous. it was at a place called jillian's which is like an adult entertainment complex, kind of like dave and busters. sort of like a ridiculous arcade/bar/dane club for adults. the decor was the sort of slick neo-industrial style that makes me angry. between songs by the bands you could hear the booty music filtering up from below.

we weren't late. this was unfortunate because the first band was like a cheap version of something that wasn't that good to begin with. it makes me appreciate all the bands i saw in michigan and how amazing simple, honest, devoid-of-all slickness music really is. denali played next and i wouldn't say they were bad. i just wasn't interested.

the weakerthans were awesome though. the music was so good and powerful it made the ridiculousness of the show completely forgetable. it was sort of hard because it seemed like a certain akwardness that i'd seen in john k. sampson's performances on other tours was absent, but in some ways things were way more powerful. the only downside is that we stood at the side of the stage closest to the guitarist. this is a bad thing because he is ridiculous. not his playing, because he's really good and though i'm sure he could be and maybe would like to be really wanky, he plays in a way that is pretty subtle and adds just enough accentuation to what are pretty simple songs. what he lacks in guitar wankiness, he makes up in motion. he plays guitar in a way that is like part tai chi, part interpretive dance, part ridiculous bedroom scene. he'll do this thing where he sort of sweeps his leg out and shakes it a little. it's scary. worse still are his facial expressions that include this pouty lip sticking out thing and the horrible lip bite. it's too much. i'd be watching john and think "this is amazing" and then i'd look over at the guitarist and just bust up laughing.

ryan knows a lot of people. cincinatti was his town and the whole night he kept running into kids.

after the show we ate delicious chinese food downtown in a restaurant that made me think that ryan was right about cincinatti kicking the crap out of columbus. we drove home and ryan and dave talked while becca and i fell asleep on each other.

est vs. edt

est = gmt - 5:00
edt = gmt - 4:00 (first sunday in april - last sunday in oct.)

perhaps this is why my time is wrong on my workstation.

softflowd
Softflowd is flow-based network traffic analyser capable of Cisco NetFlow? data export. Softflowd semi-statefully tracks traffic flows recorded by listening on a network interface or by reading a packet capture file. These flows may be reported via NetFlow? to a collecting host or summarised within softflowd itself.
